After Graduation

NOTE: The information below is designed to help families navigate the transition to high school after graduating from Midtown Public Charter School. Many of the programs involve early planning, so we encourage families to review their choices no later than the start of a student’s 8th grade year. If you represent a school option that is not included below, please email information to kevinparkinson@midtownpublic.org and we will update our site accordingly.

Jackson Public Schools: Traditional High Schools and Special Programs

The vast majority of our graduates choose to attend one of the fantastic high schools of Jackson Public Schools. There are two ways to attend high school in JPS: First, there are seven high schools that are geographically-based (that is, you attend the school based on where you reside). Additionally, JPS also offers several special programs that are not based on where you live but are instead application-based. Special programs for grade 9 students include:

  1. APAC for academics (based in Forest Hill and Murrah; this is a challenging program of study in language arts, math, science, and social studies that accelerates students in order to prepare them for AP courses in their final years of high school)

  2. APAC for arts (based in Murrah and the nearby Ida B. Wells Elementary APAC site; this is a pre-professional arts program for visual and performing arts)

  3. IB program (based in Jim Hill; this is an internationally-recognized program for academic achievement)

  4. Early college high school (this program was established to help first-generation college students and other underrepresented students earn college credits while in high school).

NEXT STEPS:

The information for enrollment at geographically-based schools is available here. The enrollment process will require you to submit your student’s final 8th grade report card and a withdrawal form from our school. We will issue both of these documents in early June.

If you wish to apply for one of the special programs, please click here. PLEASE NOTE: The special programs application for the 2024-2025 academic year is on December 21. The application requires getting several pieces of documentation and letters of recommendation from our school, so if you are interested in applying to a special program, we urge you to connect with us as early as possible so we have time to assemble what you need.

Private Schools

There are several private schools in the Jackson-Metro area. Private schools are not publicly-funded, and - as a result - parents typically have to pay tuition in order to send students to the schools. However, many private schools are eager to provide partial or full scholarships to Midtown alumna. You should check with representatives from area private schools for additional details (note: private school applications are often issued between October and December, so if you are considering a private school it is particularly important to begin discussions early). You should also note private schools are not bound by the legal principle of separation between church and state, and therefore may be religiously affiliated. We include some private schools below because these are the schools several Midtown alumna have explored or attended - Midtown does not endorse or directly support any particular private school:

St. Andrews Episcopal School: Information available here.

St. Joseph Catholic School: Information available here.

Jackson Prep: Information available here.

Jackson Academy: Information available here.

Boarding Schools

Boarding schools are residential learning communities in which students live on campus and attend school. Most boarding schools are private schools, meaning that - like the private schools listed above, they typically charge tuition, scholarships are generally available, and some may be religiously-affiliated. In the Jackson-Metro area, the most prominent boarding school is the Piney Woods School. Piney Woods is located approximately 20 miles from Jackson. Students stay on campus during the week. Most weekends students are able to return home, or they can stay on campus if you wish. In recent years, Piney Woods has expressed interest in some of Midtown’s alumna attending the school. Additional scholarships may be available for qualifying Midtown alum, so if you are potentially interested in Piney Woods, please email kevinparkinson@midtownpublic.org. You can also research more about Piney Woods by clicking here.
